New Delhi, Dec 18 (NationPress) Dreams turned into reality for Madhya Pradesh's left-arm wrist-spin all-rounder Shivang Kumar as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) selected him during the IPL 2026 auction for his base price of Rs 30 lakh.
This acquisition by SRH brings Shivang back together with his best friend and Madhya Pradesh teammate Aniket Verma, who was a notable player for the team during the disappointing 2025 season.
"I am thrilled to represent SRH. It’s a team where my best friend Aniket Verma plays. I told him last year that if he got selected, I would too, and here we are now!" Shivang expressed in an exclusive interview with IANS.
At just 23 years old, Shivang had trials with several franchises before the auction, which made him confident about his IPL debut. "I attended trials for Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals. The feedback was encouraging," he stated.
“SRH called me twice, but I couldn’t attend due to commitments in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. However, I received positive responses from all franchises, and now I’m grateful that SRH believes in my potential,” he added.
Shivang views participating in IPL 2026 as a stepping stone toward his ultimate ambition: representing India. "The IPL is an excellent opportunity for uncapped players to showcase their talents to the national selectors. I believe my skills will fit well with SRH’s needs," he said.
He also considers Aniket a significant source of motivation, as he aims to make his mark in the IPL after being recognized for his rare bowling abilities and knack for big hits. "Aniket’s impressive performance last season inspired me to believe in my capabilities at this level," Shivang noted.
Shivang, who hails from Rewa, shares that his father, Praveen Kumar, a Chief Ticket Inspector in the Railways, was his first cricket coach. "He played cricket in Bengal and had aspirations of representing India himself. I hope to fulfill his dreams through my journey," he said proudly.
His father’s positive outlook after Shivang’s selection by SRH was infectious. "He said, 'Learn from this opportunity and aim higher. Your ultimate goal is to represent India.' He was overjoyed to see me join a team renowned for its power hitters and fearless approach," Shivang recounted.
Transforming Shivang from a right-handed bowler to a left-arm spinner was his father's doing. "He taught me batting and switched my bowling style. I consider this his masterpiece," Shivang explained.
His cricketing journey gained momentum after watching the MS Dhoni biopic, which reignited his passion for the sport. "After not getting selected for the U-14 team, I almost quit cricket. But the film inspired me to continue and I immediately scored 98 in my comeback match," he reflected.
Meeting his idol, Dhoni, is at the top of Shivang’s bucket list. "Every young cricketer dreams of meeting him, especially during a match at Chepauk. I want to experience that atmosphere firsthand," he said eagerly.
His outstanding performance in the Madhya Pradesh T20 league led to his debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he showcased potential with a vital innings of 45 runs. "I didn’t take a wicket in my debut match, but I received encouragement from Venkatesh Iyer, who told me I would excel in my next opportunity," Shivang shared.
Apart from Iyer, Shivang finds inspiration in RCB captain Rajat Patidar for his stylish batting. "Rajat bhaiya’s batting is renowned, and his friendly demeanor helps us connect easily," he added.
As IPL approaches, Shivang is eager to test his skills against international stars, hoping to leave a lasting impression in IPL 2026 and attract the attention of national selectors.
"These matches will be pivotal, and I'm excited to face off against both international competitors and seasoned domestic players. It’s a whole different game, and I’m ready for the challenge!"
