Is the Shooting League of India a Major Opportunity for Star Athletes Worldwide?

New Delhi, June 9 (NationPress) The official unveiling of the inaugural Shooting League of India (SLI) has sparked excitement nationwide, and international competitors are equally eager to embrace this innovative format of the sport emerging from India. Numerous talents, including Olympic medallists and sporting legends, have expressed their interest in participating in the league.

Mary Tucker from the USA, who secured a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in the mixed 10m air rifle team event, shared her enthusiasm for joining the SLI. The 23-year-old has previously competed for the University of Kentucky and West Virginia University in NCAA competitions and played for Saltendorf in Germany’s Bundesliga. She emphasized her enjoyment of team-format competitions.

“The allure of joining the Shooting League of India was undeniable. I have a passion for leagues, having experience in the NCAA and Bundesliga, and I thrive in a team environment where spectators cheer for the entire group. The opportunity for top athletes and juniors to compete together is a significant chance to enhance shooting sports both in India and globally,” Mary stated.

The ISSF has designated the period from November 20 to December 2 for the SLI's inaugural season, which will include mixed team events in pistol (10m, 25m), rifle (10m, 50m 3 positions), and shotgun (Trap & Skeet), as set by the NRAI Technical Committee.

“India is performing at an exceptionally high level in the sport, making it a fantastic chance for Indian athletes to compete internationally. Conversely, it’s also a great opportunity for global athletes to engage with elite Indian shooters. This can help build a fan base and generate more interest worldwide,” she further elaborated.

Mary also mentioned that her experience with multiple teams could provide her an edge in the league, discussing the psychological aspects of representing a franchise.

“Athletes who have participated in the NCAA or Bundesliga for years may have a slight advantage due to their familiarity with the pressures of team competition. Competing not just for oneself or one’s country, but for a school or city, adds a different dimension where the whole community supports you. You want to make them proud and not disappoint your teammates, learning to handle that pressure is crucial,” the USA athlete explained.

On a personal note, Mary believes that the league will not only enhance the sport's popularity in the USA and beyond but also improve her individual performance.

“The chance to travel more and train with other elite athletes will elevate my shooting skills. The league will present unique opportunities and experiences, potentially putting us in unfamiliar situations, which is invaluable for growth,” she said.

“Moreover, demonstrating to the USA that a professional league can include athletes from other countries would be a significant milestone. While we have college teams, professional leagues are lacking. Highlighting global interest alongside the success of US athletes will generate excitement here, benefiting us as we approach the 2028 LA Olympics. We can create a vibrant atmosphere for spectators,” Mary added.

During her travels, Tucker has connected with numerous Indian players and looks forward to collaborating with them to further enhance her game and learn new techniques.

“I am familiar with many Indian shooters, especially Elavenil Valarivan, and I'm excited to see her growth. She is poised to gain a substantial following.

“I also maintain a strong friendship with Anjum Moudgil, who brings a wealth of sports psychology insight. I’m eager to see how she leverages the platform to promote youth engagement and mental health, an initiative I will wholeheartedly support if she pursues it,” Mary concluded.
