Patna, May 13 (NationPress) At only 15 years old, Shourya Ambure has already grasped the essence of competitive effort. Demonstrating her maturity, she heeded coach Ajit Kulkarni’s advice to avoid overexertion while pursuing a record at the Khelo India Youth Games, ultimately securing the 100m Hurdles gold on Monday.

After an extensive season, Shourya enjoyed a straightforward victory during the opening day of the Athletics competitions in Khelo India Youth Games 2025 held in Bihar. She relished her return to the Patliputra Sports Complex, where she initially garnered national recognition by clinching the title at the National Youth Championships in March.

“Back then, I was in the midst of my Board exams and even missed two papers to compete in the Nationals, as it was a qualifying event for the Asian Championship. I hadn't trained extensively, yet I believed I had the potential to excel,” she reminisced about her previous visit to Patna when she clocked a time of 14.55 seconds to win gold.

In just two months, Shourya not only marked her presence in Patna but also made her nation proud at the Asian Youth Championship in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, where she achieved a personal best time of 13.80 seconds and earned a bronze medal. On Monday, she chose not to overstrain herself in search of another personal best.

Making her debut at the Khelo India Youth Games, she recorded a time of 14.33 seconds in the heats. After experiencing some tightness in her hamstring and receiving a massage prior to the final, she secured the gold medal with a time of 14.11 seconds, finishing ahead of Sonali Das from West Bengal and Vishnu Shree NS from Kerala.

“I aimed for a better performance but I’m satisfied with my results. I recorded a good time tonight. At just 15, I have ample opportunity in the U18 category to break the National Youth Record,” she noted, referencing the 13.70-second record set by Tamil Nadu’s PM Thabitha in 2019. “My coach, who has guided me for a decade, advised me to simply run and enjoy the race.”

Shourya Ambure is a testament to a long-term vision shared by coach Ajit Kulkarni and her parents, Rupali and Avinash Ambure, both IPS officers with esteemed positions in the Maharashtra Police. “I began competing in the 80m hurdles in the U14 category and continued until under-16. I was accustomed to the 80-meter hurdle races. This was only my fourth race in the 100m Hurdles,” she explained.

“My aspirations now include winning medals at the Youth Commonwealth Games and Youth Asian Games,” concluded Shourya Ambure.
