Sydney, Oct 28 (NationPress) Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has successfully been transferred from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is now reported to be in a stable condition following a spleen laceration incurred during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Sources have informed IANS that the team management is in constant communication with him, closely monitoring his recovery.
The injury, initially misdiagnosed as a rib cage issue, proved to be more severe than initially thought, leading to Iyer’s hospitalization in the ICU of a Sydney medical facility. Fortunately, he has started to exhibit positive recovery signs, and his family is expected to arrive in Australia soon to support him.
A spleen laceration occurs when the spleen, a soft organ rich in blood located beneath the rib cage on the upper left side of the abdomen, is torn or ruptured. Due to the spleen's critical function in filtering blood, such injuries can result in significant internal bleeding, necessitating immediate and careful medical intervention.
Previously, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had confirmed that Iyer suffered an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding in the third ODI on October 25.
“Scans have confirmed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is receiving treatment, is medically stable, and is recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in collaboration with specialists in both Sydney and India, is vigilantly overseeing his injury status. The Indian Team doctor will stay in Sydney with Shreyas to assess his daily progress,” the board stated.
Iyer incurred the injury while attempting to catch a ball from Australia’s wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey. He was promptly taken to the hospital for further assessment and was admitted to the ICU.
This incident transpired during the 33rd over of Australia’s innings, when Carey mishit a short ball from seam-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana. Positioned at backward point, Iyer dashed back with the ball hovering above him and leaped to complete a tumbling catch near deep third man.
With Iyer responding positively to treatment, both the team management and fans are hopeful about his complete recovery in the weeks ahead.
