Is Shreyas Iyer Stable After His ICU Stay?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Canberra, Oct 28 (NationPress) India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav provided a reassuring update regarding Shreyas Iyer, who was under intensive care in a Sydney hospital after suffering a spleen laceration. He confirmed that the player is stable and has been responding to messages via phone.
Iyer incurred the injury while attempting to catch a ball from Australia's wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey during the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He was promptly taken to the hospital for a thorough assessment and was later admitted to the ICU.
'We reached out to him. Initially, when the news broke about his injury, I tried to contact him first. However, I learned that he didn't have a phone. Then, I got in touch with my physiotherapist, Kamlesh. He informed me that Iyer is stable. At that moment, we couldn't be certain about anything.
'We have been in contact with him for two days now. He has been responding. The fact that he is replying means he is stable. Furthermore, a doctor is present with him. He will remain under close monitoring for the next few days, which is a positive sign. His responses are encouraging,' said Suryakumar ahead of the first T20I against Australia.
'His replies indicate that he is stable. A doctor remains by his side, and he will be monitored closely for the next few days. It is looking promising, and his engagement is a good sign,' he added.
The injury, initially thought to involve the rib cage, was later confirmed to be a more serious issue by BCCI, revealing a laceration to the spleen that necessitated Iyer's ICU admission.
However, sources informed IANS that Iyer has since been transferred out of the ICU, and the team management is actively maintaining contact with him to oversee his recovery.
In addition, Suryakumar also updated on Nitish Kumar Reddy, who missed the final ODI in Sydney due to a left quadriceps injury sustained in the second match in Adelaide.
'He is recovering well; yesterday he participated in some running and batting practice in the nets. Today, he opted for a break since it was an optional practice, but he came to the ground for a team meeting and wanted to be with the squad,' he said.
