New Delhi, Nov 10 (NationPress) India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support received during his recovery from an injury sustained during the recent tour of Australia.
This positive update arrives after Iyer was hospitalized in Sydney due to a laceration to his spleen and internal bleeding, following an incident during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25.
"The sun has been a wonderful therapy. I’m thankful to be back. Thanks for all the love and care," Iyer shared on his Instagram account on Monday. The injury occurred while Iyer was attempting to take a catch running backwards from point to dismiss Alex Carey, leading him to clutch his rib cage.
The 30-year-old Iyer, who made his ODI debut in December 2017 against Sri Lanka, was promptly removed from the field and did not return for the remainder of the match. The Indian team quickly transported Iyer to a hospital for scans, where internal bleeding and a ruptured spleen were discovered, necessitating immediate surgical intervention.
On November 1, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer was discharged from the hospital in Sydney, with both Australian and Indian specialists expressing satisfaction with his recovery progress. The Indian team had assigned team doctor Rizwan Khan to accompany Iyer during his hospital stay.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia also conveyed the board's sincere appreciation to Dr. Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring that Shreyas received top-notch treatment.
Since then, the right-handed batter has remained in Sydney for follow-up consultations, and according to recent updates, he is expected to return to India soon. Upon his return, Iyer will remain sidelined for a few months to ensure complete recovery and regain match fitness.
