New Delhi, Dec 25 (NationPress) Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer is set to visit the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru for a comprehensive evaluation of his recovery from a spleen injury, after he has resumed batting practice in his hometown, Mumbai.
Iyer, who serves as India’s ODI vice-captain, incurred a serious spleen laceration while attempting to catch a ball from Australia’s wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey during the third ODI match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25. Follow-up scans conducted in a Sydney hospital indicated internal bleeding, necessitating immediate hospitalization and intensive care.
He underwent a minor surgical procedure to manage the bleeding and was under close observation by medical professionals, both in Australia and India, including the team doctor, until his condition stabilized, allowing him to return home.
“Today, Iyer is scheduled to report to CoE, having flown to Bengaluru from Mumbai earlier today. Currently, there is no information on the duration of his stay. The medical team may take approximately four to six days to conduct a thorough evaluation,” sources informed IANS on Thursday.
“Following the assessment, the CoE will determine the next steps and establish clear timelines regarding his full recovery and chances of being match-ready,” they added.
Encouragingly, Iyer practiced batting for around 30-45 minutes at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) nets in Mumbai, after commencing lightweight gym training nearly ten days ago. “He felt fine after his batting session yesterday, showing no signs of pain or discomfort,” reported another source monitoring Iyer’s recovery.
Iyer's availability for India’s three ODIs against New Zealand in January is currently uncertain. However, his participation in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai will depend entirely on the results of the CoE assessment.
“If it is determined that his complete recovery requires additional time, Iyer may be asked to return for another evaluation after either ten days or a week. Should he be declared match-ready, he could participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy games for Mumbai. If not, he might take part directly in IPL 2026, where he leads Punjab Kings,” the sources added.
