New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) - Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer is set to land in Jaipur on Sunday to participate in Mumbai's final two matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, according to Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar.
Iyer has concluded his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and has received the green light to return to competitive cricket. He will compete in Mumbai's last two league matches against Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on January 6 and 8, respectively.
“Shreyas will head to Jaipur tomorrow and will play the concluding matches of this ongoing tournament following clearance from the CoE. This is undoubtedly a significant boost for the Mumbai team,” Khanvilkar informed IANS on Saturday.
These two games hold substantial importance for Iyer as he has been selected for the ODI series against New Zealand, commencing on January 11 in Vadodara, provided he secures fitness clearance, particularly with chief selector Ajit Agarkar and committee member RP Singh present.
Iyer, who serves as India’s ODI vice-captain, suffered a severe spleen laceration while attempting a diving catch of Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey during the third ODI in Sydney on October 25.
Following scans at a Sydney hospital, internal bleeding was detected, necessitating immediate hospitalization and intensive care. He underwent a minor surgical procedure to address the bleeding and was closely monitored by medical professionals both in Australia and India, including the Indian team doctor, before his condition stabilized, allowing him to return home.
After a recovery period, Iyer participated in rehab sessions and further tests before resuming lightweight gym training. On December 24, he began batting for approximately 30-45 minutes at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) nets in Mumbai, where he exhibited no signs of discomfort.
Iyer has been at the BCCI Centre of Excellence since December 25 for additional recovery assessment. He also played in a practice match before receiving approval to return to play.
“Shreyas underwent numerous simulation tests at the CoE and performed well. He faced one challenge related to his weight, which had decreased due to the injury, affecting his shot power. However, this issue was addressed in recent days, and he is now fit to play,” a source familiar with Iyer’s recovery told IANS.
