New Delhi, Oct 27 (NationPress) Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been confirmed to have suffered a laceration injury to his spleen after incurring an earlier injury to his lower left rib cage while fielding during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, as reported by BBCi on Monday.
Iyer sustained the injury while attempting to catch a ball hit by Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey; he was promptly transported to a hospital for further examination and has been admitted to the ICU. According to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, Iyer is currently receiving treatment, is medically stable, and is making a good recovery. The Indian team's doctor will remain with him in Sydney.
“Scans have indicated a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in cooperation with specialists in both Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his condition. The Indian Team doctor will stay in Sydney with Shreyas to assess his daily progress,” Saikia stated on Monday.
IANS previously reported that specialists are expected to evaluate Iyer on Monday, determining the next steps for his recovery. Sources also indicated that Iyer was immediately hospitalized to mitigate the risk of internal bleeding causing infections that could affect other vital organs.
“Depending on the specialists' evaluation, he may spend additional days in the ICU or require close observation for possibly a week,” sources added. It is also reported that Iyer's parents, Rohini and Santosh Iyer, have sought emergency visas and may soon travel from Mumbai to Sydney to support their son.
The incident took place during the 33rd over of Australia’s innings, when Carey mishit a short delivery from seam-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana. Positioned at backward point, Iyer raced back as the ball spiraled overhead and leaped to make a spectacular tumbling catch near deep third man.
