Who Will Lead Mumbai in the Remaining Vijay Hazare Trophy Matches?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 5 (NationPress) Shreyas Iyer has been named the captain of Mumbai for the remaining matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy Elite Group C in Jaipur, as announced by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Monday.
He replaces the injured regular captain Shardul Thakur, who is unable to participate for the remainder of the tournament due to his injury. Currently, Mumbai holds the second position in Group C and will face Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday, followed by a match against Punjab on January 8.
“The MCA is delighted to announce that Shreyas Iyer will lead the Mumbai senior men’s team for the remaining league fixtures of the Vijay Hazare Trophy,” the statement read.
“Iyer takes over the captaincy from Shardul Thakur, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury. As an experienced international cricketer with solid leadership skills, Shreyas Iyer brings a sense of calmness, strategic insight, and a deep comprehension of the game.
“We are confident that under his leadership, the Mumbai team will continue to exhibit determination and maintain the illustrious legacy of Mumbai cricket. The MCA wishes Shardul Thakur a swift recovery and extends best wishes to Shreyas Iyer and the entire Mumbai squad in the upcoming matches,” stated MCA Secretary Prof. Dr. Unmesh Khanvilkar.
Interestingly, Iyer has also been included in the squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, set to begin in Vadodara on January 11. However, his participation hinges on receiving fitness clearance after the Vijay Hazare Trophy matches.
If Iyer passes his fitness assessments, the MCA will need to appoint a new captain for the knockout stages of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which commence on January 12 at the BCCI CoE Grounds in Bengaluru. Iyer had previously been sidelined due to a serious spleen injury incurred while attempting a diving catch of Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey during the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground in October of last year.
