Madrid, March 18 (NationPress) Athletic Club Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon expressed his happiness on Tuesday about rejoining the Spanish national team for the first time since last summer's European Championship.

A wrist surgery had kept Simon out of action for nearly four months after the European Championship, and he only resumed playing at the end of 2024. Nevertheless, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente demonstrated his trust in the 27-year-old, who has made 46 appearances for his nation, by calling him back at the first available opportunity.

When asked about his chances of returning to the starting lineup for Thursday's UEFA Nations League quarterfinal against the Netherlands, Simon stated he was unconcerned whether he or Arsenal's David Raba would begin the match.

"We will discover that on Thursday, but I am not losing sleep over it," he remarked, noting that he had discussed tactical approaches with De la Fuente since his return.

"He has modified a few aspects regarding playing the ball from the back," Simon elaborated, expressing his contentment in being part of a squad that "makes you feel comfortable to be here."

Additionally, he came to the defense of former Athletic Bilbao teammate Inigo Martinez, who had to withdraw from the squad due to a knee injury after receiving his first call-up in over two years.

"I believe it is unfair to question a player like Inigo. He was eager to join, and he does not deserve the criticism he is receiving," Simon stated.

"Player health should be prioritized; if there is a risk of exacerbating an injury, it is wiser to stay home," he concluded.
