Jakarta, June 3 (NationPress) Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu overcame her long-standing rival Nozomi Okuhara in the second round of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament, while Lakshya Sen faced an early exit after a challenging first-round match on Tuesday.
Sindhu triumphed in a gripping women’s singles showdown lasting one hour and 19 minutes, finishing with scores of 22-20, 21-23, 21-15.
The match was a fierce contest, filled with unforced errors and numerous game and match points. In the first game, the Indian shuttler exhibited remarkable composure, overcoming a game point and executing critical attacking shots to secure a 22-20 win.
The second game witnessed Sindhu establishing a slight early advantage before slipping to a 7-11 deficit at the interval. She mounted a strong comeback, generating two match points with a powerful cross-court smash. However, a series of errors allowed Okuhara to equalize at 20-all, ultimately winning the game 23-21.
In the final game, both competitors adopted a cautious strategy. Sindhu led 11-9 at the break, then found her rhythm, unleashing a succession of winners to surge ahead 20-12. She earned eight match points and converted the fifth to clinch the victory and progress to the round of 16.
Post-match, Sindhu reflected on her 14-year rivalry with Okuhara, expressing their unique bond off the court. "14 years. 20 matches. From my longest to the shortest World Championship finals — always against her. We’ve experienced wins and losses, creating a rivalry that only we truly understand. Keep fighting, Nozomi. The court’s never quite the same without you," she posted on X.
On the other hand, 2021 World Championships bronze medallist Sen exhibited remarkable determination against world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi of China but ultimately succumbed with scores of 11-21, 22-20, 15-21 in a closely contested first-round match lasting one hour and five minutes.
The 23-year-old made a commendable return from a back injury that kept him out of last week’s Malaysian tournament, showing great resilience despite the loss. After falling behind 11-17 in the second game, he mounted a vigorous comeback, saving a match point and snatching the game 22-20 to force a decider. However, the momentum was short-lived as world No. 1 Shi regained control in the third game to conclude the match.
In other news, Anupama Upadhyaya was eliminated after a straight-games defeat to Kim Ga Eun of South Korea.
Later, HS Prannoy along with the men’s doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are set to take the court.
