Indore, Jan 17 (NationPress) Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has dismissed worries regarding Ravindra Jadeja’s recent performance in ODIs, asserting that the experienced all-rounder is still a vital part of their strategy for the upcoming series-deciding match against New Zealand, scheduled at the Holkar Stadium this Sunday.

The veteran Jadeja has struggled with his bowling, taking only one wicket in his last five ODIs. With the current series against New Zealand tied at 1-1, he will be under scrutiny after a wicketless performance in Rajkot, where he gave away 44 runs in eight overs.

“I don’t believe there is any issue with Jadeja’s form. It’s just about getting that first wicket. Once he achieves that, he will transform into a different bowler,” Siraj mentioned during a pre-match press meeting on Saturday.

He equated the impending match in Indore to a World Cup final. “The atmosphere is fantastic as we are receiving extensive guidance from our senior players. We won the first encounter and then played the second, creating a high-pressure environment similar to a World Cup final. Such moments are rare in India, presenting us with a significant opportunity,” he added.

New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell has been a persistent challenge for India, having scored 84 runs in Vadodara followed by an unbeaten 131 in Rajkot, which earned him the Player of the Match accolade. Dismissal of Mitchell early will be crucial for India in the decisive match.

“We did our utmost to dismiss him in Rajkot. We had a strategy in place. Even top-tier batters make mistakes. If we had seized that dropped catch, the outcome could have been different,” said Siraj.

“His ability to bat against spin, especially during the middle overs—taking singles and doubles—indicates he is playing with clarity and strategy. In Rajkot, the dew was minimal, making the ball come off the bat nicely. Our aim is to get him out as soon as possible, and we plan to do the same in this encounter,” Siraj remarked.

The pacer, who was part of the victorious Indian team in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, concluded by wishing the Suryakumar Yadav-led squad good luck for their title defense starting next month. Siraj missed selection for the upcoming major event, as he is required more for Test matches than for white-ball formats.

“I was rested during the ODI series against South Africa after bowling approximately 40 overs in the preceding five-day Test match. I also played in the series against Australia before that. For a fast bowler, rest is vital, especially when engaged in regular Test matches due to the heavy workload. You need to recharge and then return with a focus on your rhythm and bowling,” he explained.

“I participated in the T20 World Cup last time but not this time; naturally, every player dreams of competing in a World Cup. However, the team selected appears strong on paper, and everyone is in form. I wish them all the best; the trophy is currently here, and it should stay here.”
