Mumbai, June 8 (NationPress) The outcome of the SoBo Mumbai Falcons' second-to-last league encounter in T20 Mumbai's third season was largely inconsequential. With a remarkable hat-trick of victories earlier in the tournament, they had already secured their spot in the semifinals. A win against the Eagle Thane Strikers at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday night would have opened up all other qualification spots.
However, a stellar performance by the Strikers – highlighted by a breathtaking catch from Amit Pandey to dismiss Falcons' captain Shreyas Iyer – resulted in the Falcons suffering their first defeat of the season. The Strikers managed to score 151 runs for the loss of eight wickets after being asked to bat, whereas the Falcons were bowled out for just 115 runs in the 16th over.
Despite opener Angkrish Raghuvanshi falling early, Ishan Mulchandani and Shreyas, batting at number three, provided the Falcons with a brisk start. Even after Mulchandani fell victim to Strikers' captain Atharva Ankolekar’s left-arm spin, the Falcons maintained a healthy run rate.
Things took a turn in the last two overs of the Powerplay. In the fifth over, promising young player Harsh Aghav sacrificed his wicket due to a misunderstanding while running between the wickets.
Just three balls later, Shreyas, who had been in fine form, top-edged a pace variation from Sairaj Patil. The ball appeared to be dropping between three converging fielders, but Amit Pandey, sprinting from mid-on to midwicket, made an incredible leap, extending his hand to catch the ball before landing safely.
At 58/4, the Falcons faced a daunting task on a pitch that was becoming increasingly challenging to bat on. After Vinayak Bhoir edged one down the leg side early in his innings, the situation worsened with Akash Parkar being ruled lbw.
Earlier in the match, Siddharth Raut overcame an injury scare from the previous day and excelled with the new ball. At 10 for three in the third over, the Falcons had put significant pressure on the Strikers. Nevertheless, Sairaj Patil (61 runs off 37 balls, including 3 fours and 5 sixes) delivered a remarkable performance that not only rescued the Strikers but also earned him the Orange Cap.
Once Harsh Aghav, who took three wickets, dismissed Patil in the 15th over, Vinay Kunwar (39 runs off 25 balls, 2 fours and 2 sixes) concluded the innings strongly for the Strikers.
This match's outcome confirmed that the SoBo Mumbai Falcons, SCM Maratha Royals, and the Strikers advanced to the semifinals with one game remaining.
