New Delhi, Feb 7 (NationPress) At only 19 years old, Sonam captured attention during the Women’s Hockey India League 2024-25 with her remarkable performances. Her pivotal goals were instrumental in leading JSW Soorma Hockey Club to the final in this inaugural season. The forward from Haryana emerged as the second-highest scorer in the tournament and topped the list for Indian players.

Reflecting on her breakout season, Sonam remarked, “Before the tournament kicked off, I honestly didn’t anticipate playing any matches because of my youth and the presence of much more seasoned attackers in my team.”

“When I was given the opportunity to participate in the opening match against Delhi SG Pipers, I realized I had to perform at my best to remain in the lineup,” she continued.

With her consistent goal-scoring and ability to create opportunities, Sonam became a significant threat to rival teams. When asked about the key to her success, she stated, “Our team embraced a highly aggressive style of hockey, which magnified the importance of the striker’s role. I understood that I needed to excel for the team’s success, so I aimed to score as frequently as possible.”

Sonam's outstanding displays on the field earned her the title of Upcoming Player of The Tournament. “I take great pride in this honor, and it has fueled my motivation more than ever. I know I can improve and achieve greater heights, and I will strive to represent my country,” Sonam expressed.

“My coach, Jude Menezes, was incredibly supportive and always available whenever I needed assistance. He inspired me significantly to win this accolade,” Sonam added.

Sonam shared that her role model while growing up was Rani Rampal Singh, with whom she had the chance to collaborate during HIL. Excitedly, she recounted, “After every match, Rani Rampal would point out my mistakes and guide me on how to rectify them. She has been a tremendous source of support, and I aspire to emulate her.”

Following Soorma's loss in the final, Sonam was seen emotional on the sidelines, revealing her desire to lift the trophy with her team. “We aimed to make history and win like everyone else, but when that didn’t materialize, it felt strange, and I started to cry,” Sonam shared.

Sonam’s courageous efforts in the Hero HIL have finally secured her a place in the national camp, as she has been selected as a reserve for the upcoming FIH Women’s Pro League matches in Bhubaneswar.

“My family was thrilled when they received the news. I feel both good and confident in my ability to contribute to India. I am learning a great deal from the senior players in the camp and will seize the opportunity if I get to play,” she remarked regarding her call-up to the national team.
