Rourkela, Jan 26 (NationPress) Soorma Hockey Club is gaining momentum as the season approaches its climax, having triumphed in both of their matches during Phase 2. Their pivotal clash in the men's league is set to take place against the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on Monday.
In their previous showdown with the Lancers, Soorma achieved a narrow 4-3 victory, with a decisive goal from Harish Somappa Mutagar.
“It was a tight match against the Lancers last time, but our strategy will remain unchanged for this encounter. We must ensure our readiness and keep our team fit and fresh for this crucial game. We aim to present our best selves in every match,” commented head coach Jeroen Baart.
Currently, Soorma sits in fifth place on the points table, boasting three wins, two penalty shootout victories, and one penalty shootout defeat. They have secured victories in both of their Pool A matches since the commencement of Phase 2, keeping their semifinal dreams alive with two league games remaining.
“I take great pride in our team. We've made significant strides since we came together in early December. The Lancers, positioned sixth on the points table, have Thierry Brinkman as their standout player, having netted nine goals in nine matches, placing him at the top of the scoring leaderboard. They are still in contention for the semifinals, contingent on winning this match, making it crucial for Soorma.
“Thierry is undoubtedly a high-caliber player with a unique drive that makes him a threat in the offensive zone. We will need to focus our defense on him, but he is not the only player we need to be cautious of; Domene and Antoine Kina are also key players for the Lancers. However, I am confident that, as demonstrated in our first encounter, we can match their strengths and will be prepared to take them on,” he added.
