New Delhi, April 12 (NationPress) IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has showered accolades on 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, asserting that the young talent has the potential to become India’s youngest-ever international debutant. Nonetheless, he emphasized that he is not advocating for an immediate selection, even labeling the teen as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for the selectors.

Sooryavanshi gained attention last year by being the youngest player ever to be signed during an IPL auction. On Friday, he dazzled once more with an explosive performance, racing to a 15-ball fifty and concluding with an impressive 78 runs off just 26 balls against the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati.

Dhumal pointed out that while the senior national team currently has a wealth of options for the opening slot—featuring talents such as Abhishek Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sanju Samson—the 15-year-old batsman presents a unique scenario.

"I understand that there isn’t a clear opening position available at present, given the outstanding performances of players like Abhishek, Jaiswal, and Sanju. However, at just 15 years old, I truly believe he (Vaibhav Sooryavanshi) could become the youngest debutant for India. I’m not pushing for his immediate inclusion, but this is a unique chance for the selectors to contemplate selecting such a young prodigy," Dhumal remarked during an interview with IANS.

Previously, Sooryavanshi had also impressed by taking on India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, striking two sixes in an over, including one on the very first ball he faced, during RR's triumph over the Mumbai Indians.

His fifty against RCB marked his second of the season, having also achieved a 15-ball half-century in RR’s season opener against Chennai Super Kings. Notably, both of his half-centuries this season have come in just 15 balls, tying for the joint-third fastest fifties in IPL history. He currently leads the charts for sixes with 18 maximums and boasts a remarkable strike rate of 266.66 in the ongoing campaign.

Point of View

The emergence of young talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is crucial for the future of Indian cricket. While immediate selection may not be advisable given the current roster, the potential he shows is an opportunity for selectors to build a robust future.
