Vaibhav Sooryavanshi named Bihar captain for first two Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy games
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the teenaged batting phenomenon, has been appointed captain of Bihar's senior cricket team for the first time, leading the side in their opening two fixtures of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) announced a 17-member squad on Friday, 6 November, naming Suraj Kashyap as vice-captain. BCA president Harsh Vardhan said the leadership role was designed to accelerate Sooryavanshi's development as both a player and a future captain.
Why Only Two Games
Sooryavanshi's captaincy stint is limited to Bihar's first two matches because he is scheduled to join the India A squad for the Men's Rising Stars Asia Cup. The 50-over tournament is set to be held in Doha, Qatar, from 19 to 29 November. Bihar face Saurashtra and Railways in Indore on 14 and 16 November respectively, meaning Sooryavanshi will be available for both before departing for international duty.
Sooryavanshi's Remarkable Rise
The captaincy is a natural progression for a cricketer whose ascent has been nothing short of extraordinary. Sooryavanshi powered India to the 2026 Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup title with a stunning 175 in the final, earning him the Player of the Tournament award. He then became the leading run-scorer in IPL 2026, amassing 776 runs for the Rajasthan Royals at a strike rate of 237.30.
Those performances earned him a senior international call-up. He became India's youngest international cricketer on debut in the second T20I against England in Manchester in July. Across ten T20Is, he has scored 295 runs at an average of 29.5 and a strike rate of 185.53, including two fifties.
Record Powerplay Partnership
His most recent headline act came in the third T20I against New Zealand, where Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma posted 118 runs without loss in the first six overs — the highest powerplay total in men's T20I history. The pair went on to add 133 for the opening wicket in just 43 balls. Sooryavanshi contributed 45 off 19 deliveries, while Sharma smashed 113 off 38 balls.
BCA's Statement and Squad Selection Process
Speaking on the appointment, BCA president Harsh Vardhan said: 'Vaibhav has already demonstrated tremendous talent, confidence and maturity at a young age, and this responsibility will provide him with another opportunity to grow as a cricketer and leader. We are hopeful that under Vaibhav's leadership, the team will deliver a disciplined, competitive and effective performance while representing the state in the upcoming season.'
The squad was finalised at a meeting of the BCA's senior men's selection committee on Friday, following trials held from 4 to 6 November and a review of past performances. Committee Chairman Harvinder Singh and member Amitabh Vijayvargiya attended in person, while selector S. Sarath joined via telephone. Mangal Mahour and pacer Sakib Hussain were also named but are subject to fitness assessments after the first two games. The BCA has additionally named 16 standby players. The Ranji Trophy support staff will accompany the side for the entire tournament, with Harvinder and Vijayvargiya travelling to Indore to observe the matches in person.
All eyes will be on how the young captain marshals his resources against Saurashtra — and whether this domestic stint strengthens his case for a longer run in India's T20I plans.
