New Delhi, Dec 20 (NationPress) The head coach of South Africa, Shukri Conrad, stated that the final segment of their extensive tour in India has been instrumental in preparing the team for the upcoming T20 World Cup next year.
Despite facing a 3-1 defeat in the T20I series against India, South Africa gained vital experience in conditions akin to those expected during the T20 World Cup, even though factors like fog and dew will be minimized in February and March.
Three out of four group-stage matches for South Africa will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Should they advance, two of their three Super Eight matches will also be held at this venue, making their final tour stop in Ahmedabad particularly significant for their preparation.
"This tour has been fantastic. You learn a lot about your team, the game, and the conditions. This last phase has been incredibly beneficial as we gear up for the World Cup in a few months," Conrad remarked.
"While winning every series is ideal, it's essential to acknowledge that India is the reigning champion in this format, and we must return ready to challenge them," Conrad added, as reported by ESPNCricinfo after the tour's conclusion.
Quinton de Kock, the wicketkeeper-batter, is poised to be a key player for South Africa in the major tournament. "Whether opening the batting or playing at No. 3, we have a strong lineup with Quinton and Aiden, and we are considering one more player for the top order. We've addressed several aspects of our middle to lower order," Conrad explained.
Despite a wicketless performance in only two matches of the T20I series against India, pacer Anrich Nortje remains a strong candidate for the World Cup squad. He was the team's standout bowler during the 2024 competition.
"Anrich hasn't participated in cricket for quite some time. We understand that competing at the highest level is challenging. We've ensured he gains match experience without rushing him back and risking injury. I'm satisfied with our management approach, and he will gain significant match readiness during the SA20," Conrad concluded.
