Southee Reflects on Near Miss of 100 Sixes in Test Cricket

Hamilton, Dec 16 (NationPress) New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee will conclude his Test career with 98 sixes, falling just two short of the prestigious 100 sixes mark, as he was dismissed for two during his final innings in the third Test against England.
Southee matched the six-hitting record of former West Indies star Chris Gayle in the first innings of the ongoing Test at Seddon Park on Saturday. Both Southee and Gayle now share an impressive tally of 98 sixes in Test cricket, trailing only behind Adam Gilchrist (100), Brendon McCullum (107), and Ben Stokes (133).
As New Zealand's all-time leading wicket-taker, Southee took to the crease for the last time in Test matches, receiving a guard of honour from the England players on Monday.
"It was a strange feeling. I've never felt such pressure coming in to bat. But it was enjoyable. It has been a wonderful couple of days for the lads. He (Brendon McCullum) said something—I didn't catch it all—but he's been a long-time friend and it's nice to have him here for this final moment. Every wicket for NZ is a special occasion," Southee reflected at stumps.
A seasoned campaigner with 106 Tests and 389 wickets to his name, Southee declared his retirement from the longest format of the game after the series against England.
"As I have mentioned before, growing up, taking one wicket—every time you achieve that feeling—is something I will definitely miss. It has been a significant part of my life, and it has been an honour to accomplish what I have," he added.
Southee fell two sixes short of reaching a milestone achieved by only three players in the history of Test cricket.
"The next couple of days are likely to be memorable but also emotional. Sorry to disappoint with the missed 100 Test sixes," he concluded.
The 36-year-old took the spotlight with a quick-fire 10-ball 23, including one four and three sixes, helping the Black Caps surpass the 300-run mark in their first innings.
