New Delhi, Feb 16 (NationPress) Former New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee believes that the Blackcaps' recent victory in the Tri-Nation Series against hosts Pakistan and South Africa will provide a significant advantage for the squad in the upcoming Champions Trophy.
New Zealand completed the series unbeaten, clinching the final with a five-wicket win over Pakistan.
"The way the team has performed, various players have risen to the occasion," Southee shared in an exclusive interview with the ICC. "It’s a commendable blend of experienced players and dynamic young talent with immense potential. The lessons learned from this Tri-Nation Series will undoubtedly benefit them in the tournament.
"Taking this momentum into the tournament while being familiar with the playing conditions is certainly going to be advantageous.
As New Zealand aims to capture their first Champions Trophy title since 2000, Southee acknowledged that the team's bowling unit is somewhat lacking in experience due to the absence of both him and Trent Boult.
Nevertheless, the former pacer expressed his faith in Will O'Rourke and Nathan Smith, encouraging them to embrace their responsibilities during this critical time.
“It’s a different scenario not having Trent and myself at an ICC event, but it’s also exciting. These tournaments are thrilling to be a part of, and I’m eager to see how these young talents perform."
“Will O’Rourke has shown what he is capable of in Test cricket. Although he is still quite young, he possesses all the qualities that will contribute to his success in international cricket. I eagerly anticipate witnessing his debut in an ICC event. Nathan Smith exudes confidence, which is essential at this level," he noted.
Southee also praised the likes of Kane Williamson and captain Mitchell Santner, expecting them to lead the Kiwi charge.
“Kane is in great form; it's wonderful to see him contributing with a couple of solid scores. He’s a class act. Although he hasn’t played much one-day cricket in recent years, it’s rewarding to see him back with significant contributions, which we have come to expect. As a fan of the Black Caps, it’s quite gratifying," he shared.
“When he’s at bat, he brings a wealth of experience and maintains control throughout his innings. Mitch has been doing an excellent job as captain. While it’s still relatively new for him, I had a glimpse of his captaincy towards the end of my career. He remains composed, which reflects in his gameplay.
“He thinks strategically about the game and aims to lead through his performances across all facets. He’s an outstanding fielder, a remarkably skilled bowler, and a dependable batsman, so I’m confident he will excel in all these areas," added the seasoned bowler.
Southee expressed his optimism for his former teammates, believing they can replicate their success from 2000.
“Examining New Zealand's history in ICC tournaments, they consistently perform well. In a competition like the Champions Trophy, if a team gains momentum, anything is possible. I hope to see the Blackcaps lifting the trophy at the end," he concluded.
