Dubai, Sep 9 (NationPress) Sri Lanka has included middle-order batter Janith Liyanage in their Asia Cup roster, marking his return to T20I cricket after a three-year hiatus.
The squad of 17 players, captained by Charith Asalanka, is set to begin their tournament journey against Bangladesh on September 13 in Abu Dhabi. The 30-year-old Liyanage is known as a white-ball specialist, having played 28 ODIs and scored 824 runs, in addition to his three prior T20I matches.
Liyanage showcased his skills in the recent ODI series against Zimbabwe in Harare, where he made significant contributions of an unbeaten 70 and 19 runs, leading Sri Lanka to a 2-0 victory.
His last T20I match took place in February 2022 against India in Dharamsala.
The all-rounder has already joined the Sri Lankan team in Dubai, traveling with star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who is recovering from a hamstring injury and is expected to join the squad shortly.
Liyanage’s inclusion enhances Sri Lanka’s lineup of seam-bowling all-rounders, complementing Dasun Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne.
After their successful white-ball series in Zimbabwe, the Sri Lankan team arrived in Dubai on Tuesday and will base themselves in Abu Dhabi for the group stage. Following their match against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka will face Hong Kong on September 15 and Afghanistan on September 18 in Group B.
