Colombo, Jan 8 (NationPress) - The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has made a significant move by appointing Vikram Rathour as their batting coach as they intensify preparations for the forthcoming T20 World Cup, which is set to commence on February 7.
Rathour, who previously served as the batting coach for India from 2019 to 2024, had a notable impact during his tenure, helping the team excel in ICC tournaments, including clinching the T20 World Cup title in 2024. Following his departure from the Indian team, he took on the role of batting and assistant coach for the Rajasthan Royals.
His appointment is on a consultancy basis, primarily aimed at gearing up the team for the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2026. A former Indian cricketer who played in both Tests and One-Day Internationals, Rathour will start his duties on January 18 and will be with the team until March 10, according to a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket.
Currently, Sri Lanka is facing Pakistan in a three-match series as they prepare for the T20 World Cup. They aim to leverage Rathour’s experience as they prepare to co-host this prestigious global event.
Additionally, Sri Lanka has appointed legendary fast bowler Lasith Malinga as a fast-bowling consultant for a 40-day period, effective from December 15 to January 25.
Malinga has previously served in this capacity officially on two occasions and has also provided informal guidance to top bowlers over the years. For the past two years, he has been advising the coaching staff led by Sanath Jayasuriya.
Sri Lanka has been placed in Group B alongside Australia, Oman, Ireland, and Zimbabwe. The 2014 champions will kick off their campaign against Ireland on February 8 at the R Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo.
