New Delhi, Feb 25 (NationPress) The retention deadline for The Hundred 2025 has passed, as teams finalize their roster before the eagerly awaited Draft on March 12. Each of the eight participating teams could retain up to 10 players from their 2024 lineups.

In a significant development, Australian cricketing icon Steve Smith, who took on the role of interim captain in place of Pat Cummins, will be making his debut in this competition with Welsh Fire in 2025.

“I’ve observed The Hundred from a distance and am thrilled to finally participate. It appears to be a lot of fun, and the cricket is top-tier, featuring talent in every team,” Smith stated.

Notable signings include Rashid Khan from Afghanistan and former Australian women's captain Meg Lanning, both of whom have joined Oval Invincibles.

This year, teams had the flexibility to retain a mix of players, which included one centrally contracted England player and up to three international players. A new rule for 2025 allowed teams to make Direct Signings of overseas players who did not participate in The Hundred last season, giving teams the opportunity to incorporate new international talent. These Direct Signings are included in the 10-player retention limit, enhancing the flexibility in squad formation.
