Dale Steyn: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is Instilling Fear in Bowlers Like Bumrah
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 8 (NationPress) Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn asserts that Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has started to establish a psychological advantage over bowlers, compelling even elite players like Jasprit Bumrah to make uncommon mistakes.
Steyn highlighted the instance when Sooryavanshi struck Bumrah over mid-on with the very first delivery in their encounter against the Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, indicating that the young talent's aggressive style is already altering bowlers' tactics.
“I believe that's exactly what he's accomplished. He has instilled a certain fear in bowlers that he will punish them for any mistakes,” Steyn remarked to ESPNCricinfo.
Commenting on Sooryavanshi's impact, Steyn noted that even the renowned Indian pacer, Bumrah, seemed to be second-guessing his strategy and missed his target—an unusual occurrence for a bowler of his standard.
“That delivery from Bumrah was right in the slot. It's a rarity for him. Even the great Bumrah is likely thinking, ‘don't mess this up, or this guy will hit me for six’,” he elaborated.
“When you start to think like that, you're more prone to errors. You could see Bumrah almost chuckling after Sooryavanshi hit him for six as if to say, ‘I knew this would happen if I got it wrong’. And that’s precisely what took place,” he explained.
Steyn is confident that Sooryavanshi fears no bowler, and his fearless approach makes him a formidable opponent regardless of the bowler's reputation.
“This kid isn't intimidated, man. If you serve him a half-volley, he's going to send it out of the park. So, tighten up your length and try to bowl well, and you might stand a chance against him. Otherwise, you’re in for a long day, whether you're Bumrah or just an average bowler. It’s fantastic batting,” he added.
In terms of the match, RR secured a thrilling 80-run opening partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi, ultimately defeating MI by 27 runs in a rain-affected game at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday, marking their third consecutive win in the IPL 2026 season.
Vaibhav amassed 39 runs off just 14 deliveries, including two sixes off Bumrah and three against other bowlers. Meanwhile, Jaiswal remained not out at 77 off only 32 balls.
