Dale Steyn Critiques SRH's Bowling Strategy in IPL 2026 Loss
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 29 (NationPress) Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn has voiced his concerns regarding the bowling strategy of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) following their six-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2026. He pointed out that the team displayed a lack of clear plans in their bowling, which contributed to their defeat despite having a commendable score of 201/9.
At the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB scored 76 runs during the power-play phase of their innings, with bowlers Jaydev Unadkat, Harshal Patel, and Eshan Malinga conceding runs. With Pat Cummins absent, Nitish Kumar Reddy opened the bowling but did not complete his full set of overs.
“SRH captain Ishan Kishan played a fantastic innings, scoring 80 runs that showcased his control over the game. He ensured SRH maintained their aggressive batting approach early on. However, in the latter stages, there were virtually no strategies being executed by the SRH bowlers,” Steyn remarked.
“Defending high totals is challenging with their current bowling lineup. I was surprised to see Nitish Kumar Reddy bowl only two overs during the Powerplay and not return to bowl later. This indicates a need for extensive discussions between the SRH management and the captain regarding the optimal use of their bowling resources,” he added during an interview on JioStar.
Looking ahead, SRH is set to face the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who are three-time champions, on April 2 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Steyn, who served as SRH’s bowling coach from 2021 to 2024 after previously playing for the team, emphasized that the team's aggressive batting style will only be effective if the bowlers can support it with wicket-taking performances, especially on the flat pitches typical in Hyderabad.
“Given their aggressive style of play, they need bowlers to secure wickets and exert pressure on the opposing batsmen, particularly on the flat decks in Hyderabad. Otherwise, defending scores exceeding 200 runs will be a daunting task for SRH with their current bowlers. They must adopt smarter bowling strategies and adhere to a solid plan, which unfortunately was lacking against RCB,” he concluded.
