Hyderabad, March 29 (NationPress) Irfan Pathan, the former Indian all-rounder, has expressed that Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) issues during the powerplay and their ineffective bowling contributed significantly to their six-wicket defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2026 season opener held at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.

Pathan reflected on the match, noting that SRH's inability to take advantage of the powerplay after losing early wickets severely impacted their chances of setting a competitive total.

“Ishan Kishan mentioned post-match that they need to reassess their approach, particularly at the outset. When you lose wickets consistently, it’s crucial to play more responsibly, which unfortunately didn’t occur,” Pathan stated during an interview with Jio Hotstar.

Facing early adversity, SRH lost three wickets in the powerplay, which forced the middle order to focus on stabilization rather than acceleration. While the team managed to reach a total of 200 runs, Pathan felt this was insufficient given the pitch conditions.

“Losing three early wickets makes it exceedingly challenging to surpass the 200-run mark. They did score 200, but it fell short on this particular pitch,” he commented.

Pathan also underscored the concern regarding SRH's bowling capabilities, particularly in critical moments of the game.

“It was a combination of not starting well and the bowling lacking precision. Kishan was under pressure, and leading a team in the IPL for the first time is never simple,” he observed.

The former cricketer emphasized that managing the powerplay effectively, both with bat and ball, is essential for SRH as they progress in the tournament.

“He lacks adequate bowling resources. Handling the powerplay has proven difficult, and that’s an area they must enhance,” Pathan concluded.

Sunrisers Hyderabad's next challenge will be against the Lucknow Super Giants at their home ground, Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad, on April 5.

Point of View

It is clear that Sunrisers Hyderabad's inability to manage early setbacks and their bowling weaknesses contributed to their loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The team's performance raises questions about their strategic approach and adaptability in high-pressure situations.
