New Delhi, May 15 (NationPress) England's captain Ben Stokes has shown optimism about returning to his all-rounder responsibilities as the team gears up for an important Test summer, kicking off with a four-day match against Zimbabwe, followed by the significant five-match series against India.
Stokes has been sidelined since injuring his left hamstring during the final Test in New Zealand in December 2024. After undergoing surgery in January, he is now ready to lead England in a four-day Test at Trent Bridge, starting May 22.
“I feel fantastic. Training and playing are two entirely different experiences. No matter how much you practice, you can't match the intensity of a real game. While I am eager to get back on the field, I understand that it will be a different experience compared to my training,” Stokes shared with Sky Sports on Thursday.
“Regarding my role as a player, I aim to be that full seamer, batting at six, and striving to dominate every scenario, whether I have the bat or ball. I am confident to return to the field at the highest level. I have done it before, and I believe I can do it again,” he added.
A previous injury in the same area, which occurred while participating in The Hundred last August, had kept Stokes out of three home Tests against Sri Lanka and one away match in Pakistan. However, he insisted that he feels fitter than ever in his playing career.
“I always put in the effort. My philosophy during injuries is to return in better shape than before. I have worked diligently on all facets, from my cricket skills to overall fitness, and I am confident that when I return, I will be in the best physical shape of my career,” he stated.
Stokes concluded by mentioning that he has been in discussions with head coach Brendon McCullum regarding fitness management and regaining his top form in Tests. “At 33, I want to avoid situations that can keep me off the field unnecessarily. I frequently converse with Baz about various aspects, and we’ve had constructive discussions about how he can assist me in my return to form,” he shared.
