Chelmsford, Sep 9 (NationPress) England has received a crucial boost ahead of the upcoming Ashes series in Australia, with Test captain Ben Stokes back in training following a shoulder injury.
Stokes has been sidelined since injuring his shoulder during the fourth Test against India in Manchester back in July. In that match, he achieved a remarkable five wickets in the first innings and scored a stunning 141 while batting. Consequently, he was unable to participate in the fifth and final Test, which saw Ollie Pope stepping in as captain for the decisive match at The Oval.
The seasoned all-rounder, who initially expected to be out for six to seven weeks, has eased concerns about missing the Ashes opener by returning to the nets with England's county team, Durham.
As the first Ashes Test approaches on November 21 in Perth, Durham coach Ryan Campbell confirmed that Stokes has resumed batting practice during the team's training sessions.
"Stokes is back in training," Campbell stated on BBC Radio 5 Live. "Over the past week, he has begun hitting balls and had an excellent session. Scott Borthwick was throwing to him along with (coach) Will Gidman for nearly two hours."
"The batting aspect is progressing well, but the bowling may take more time. He is being managed very carefully," he added.
England is also keeping a close watch on the fitness of key fast bowler Mark Wood, who is recovering from a knee injury sustained during the ICC Champions Trophy in February. Campbell mentioned that Wood is likely to play a red-ball match for Durham in the County Championship next week to demonstrate his fitness.
"I’m hopeful that Wood will play for us next week. If that happens, it’s a significant advantage for both Durham and England. He is very close to returning," Campbell remarked.
Stokes' presence will be vital for England as they aim for their first Ashes series victory in Australia since 2011. Campbell expressed that England's chances to win the Ashes hinge on Stokes participating in all five Tests and performing well, though he admits uncertainty about whether this will happen.
"Stokes is exceptional because he strengthens your batting lineup and serves as a genuine asset as a third or fourth seamer. He will bowl numerous overs and take wickets..."
"The way he approaches his recovery is impressive. It’s a testament to why he is considered one of the greatest all-rounders ever, and he will be prepared for Australia."
"He will leave no stone unturned, but can he handle five Tests in a row with the workload? He will strive for it, but I'm not completely certain," Campbell concluded.
