Is Sujata Kujur Ready for the Olympic Games After Joining the Senior Set-Up?

New Delhi, May 6 (NationPress) From the vibrant hockey fields of Sundargarh in Odisha, where hockey is ingrained in the culture, young Sujata Kujur is making her mark. At just 21, the defender has successfully transitioned into the senior ranks of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team and was part of the team that took on Australia, a formidable challenge in the realm of international hockey.

Reflecting on her inaugural tour with the senior squad, Sujata remarked, “The tour was an incredible learning experience for me, as it marked my first opportunity to play alongside the senior team. The added pressure can be daunting, but I gained invaluable insights by observing the seasoned players and how they conduct themselves during training and matches.”

“The senior team members were exceptionally welcoming and supportive from the outset. They consistently encouraged me to remain calm and focus on playing my natural game. The camaraderie was truly uplifting,” she shared.

However, Sujata’s journey in hockey has not been without its challenges. Growing up in Sundargarh, she idolized Deep Grace Ekka and began her hockey career at the tender age of 10. Despite facing financial hurdles, her resolve remained steadfast.

“I began my training in my hometown’s academy at a young age. Initially, I lacked my own hockey stick or shoes, often borrowing from my teammates. There were times I played barefoot due to worn-out shoes, but my passion for the sport never waned,” she reminisced.

The youngest of three siblings, Sujata credits her family's unwavering support. “My parents have always been my biggest cheerleaders. They never discouraged me from pursuing hockey. Instead, they have consistently motivated me to give my best and strive for excellence,” she stated.

Receiving the call-up for the Australia tour was a dream realized. “When I learned of my selection, my family was ecstatic. Having just joined the national camp, I found it hard to believe myself. It was a deeply proud moment for us all,” she expressed.

Reflecting on her early days, Sujata noted, “I received my first hockey stick when I was around 15 years old. The coaches at my academy continually inspired me to work hard and enhance my skills daily.”

After making her debut for India in the friendlies in Perth, Sujata is now focused on her aspirations. “My ultimate goal is to play more matches for India. I dream of being part of the Indian team at the Olympics and representing my country in such a prestigious arena,” she concluded.
