Super League Kerala (SLK) returns for its third edition on Friday, 26 September 2026, with defending champions Kannur Warriors taking on last season's finalists Thrissur Magic FC in the opening fixture at the Jawahar Municipal Stadium in Kochi. The league has grown into one of Kerala's most-watched regional football properties, and Season 3 arrives with structural rule changes that could reshape how the competition is decided.

Six Teams, Bigger Stakes

A total of six clubs will compete in a home-and-away format for the coveted SLK trophy. Alongside Kannur Warriors and Thrissur Magic FC, the field includes Malappuram FC, 2024 winners Calicut FC, Thiruvananthapuram Kombans FC, and Forca Kochi FC. Calicut FC, who won the inaugural title in 2024, will be eager to reclaim the crown they surrendered last season.

Rule Changes That Set SLK Apart

The league has introduced two landmark format changes for Season 3. First, tied group-stage matches will no longer end as draws — they will proceed directly to penalty shootouts, ensuring a definitive winner in every fixture. SLK Director and CEO Mathew Joseph confirmed that the format has received clearance from both FIFA and the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

'So, this year, what we are looking at is a penalty shootout. And at the end of the (league) game, there will be a definitive winner,' Mathew said. He added: 'For the first time in the country, we will have a league that has implemented a penalty shootout at the end of the match.'

Second, the semifinals will shift to a two-legged, home-and-away format — mirroring the structure used in continental competitions such as the UEFA Champions League. 'There will be the first leg of the semifinal. And the same team will go and play against the opposite team on their home turf. So, they get two chances,' Mathew explained. Both changes are firsts for a domestic league structure in India, according to the organisers.

Opening Ceremony and Entertainment

The launch event promises a multi-act performance lineup. Fans can expect appearances from popular dancer Sarangi Shyam, rappers MC Couper and MXRDerror (Aditi Nair R), and a DJ set by Daszi at the opening venue. Rapper Dabzee is separately lined up for a half-time show at the Kannur Stadium.

SLK Managing Director Firoz Meeran struck an upbeat tone ahead of the season opener. 'We are extremely excited to begin Season 3 of Super League Kerala. Every new season gives us an opportunity to take another step forward in building a stronger and more sustainable football ecosystem in Kerala,' he said. Meeran added that the league aims to bring together 'passionate fans, talented players, experienced coaches and clubs on an even bigger platform' this season.

With Kannur Warriors defending their title, Calicut FC seeking a comeback, and a revamped format raising the competitive stakes, Season 3 is shaping up to be the most consequential edition of Super League Kerala yet.
