New Delhi, Jan 25 (NationPress) Rohit Sharma, who guided India to victory in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, commended the current captain Suryakumar Yadav for his influential role in the national team, referring to him as a significant player who has consistently contributed positively.
Suryakumar achieved his first fifty in the format after a long gap of 468 days and 23 innings, scoring an impressive unbeaten 82, featuring nine fours and four sixes during India’s seven-wicket triumph against New Zealand in Raipur.
As the Men’s T20 World Cup is set to commence on February 7, Suryakumar's return to form after a challenging 2025 bodes well for India's efforts to defend their title on home turf.
“A captain’s form is crucial, but it’s not solely about the captain. Losing a key player like Surya affects the team’s batting strength. His performance consistently impacts India’s success,” Rohit shared.
“This is a team sport, and Surya's high strike rate and innovative shots disrupt the opposition's strategies. His ability to put pressure on bowlers makes him invaluable,” Rohit added during an interview on JioHotstar.
Having played alongside Suryakumar in various formats, Rohit highlighted his exceptional cricketing intellect. “Suryakumar has a profound understanding of the game. Our conversations during IPL matches have always been insightful,” he noted.
“He possesses the acumen to elevate the performance of those around him. The upcoming T20 World Cup will have its challenges, but the team is equipped to handle them,” he concluded.
Rohit also praised Abhishek Sharma for his strategic batting style, which has been pivotal in securing strong starts during the power-play. “Abhishek doesn’t just rely on brute strength; his approach is tactical and well-rounded. His ability to score quickly is critical for an opener,” he remarked.
“By contributing 50-60 runs in the initial overs, one lays the groundwork for the team’s success. Preparing for bowlers and practicing diligently in the nets are essential,” he summed up.
