Indian Wells, March 12 (NationPress) The No. 23 seed Elina Svitolina from Ukraine triumphed against the rain and advanced to the Indian Wells Open quarterfinals after defeating the No. 4 seed American Jessica Pegula with a score of 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.

The former semifinalist at Indian Wells overcame her early struggles and dramatically turned the match around, winning 12 of the last 15 games, marking her journey to the 21st WTA 1000 quarterfinal, her first since 2021.

On a misty day in the California desert, Svitolina and Pegula faced a significant rain delay after the opening game of the final set. However, Svitolina returned from the break with renewed determination, putting Pegula on the defensive and securing the victory.

Pegula came into the Indian Wells tournament fresh off a title win in Austin earlier this month, but Svitolina emerged victorious, clinching only her third win over Pegula in their eight encounters.

For the first time since 2019, Svitolina has reached the quarterfinals at Tennis Paradise and will compete against Mirra Andreeva, who defeated Elena Rybakina for the second time in three weeks with an impressive score of 6-1, 6-2.

The 17-year-old Russian sensation Andreeva's success comes on the heels of her first WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Championships, making her the youngest player to break into the Top 10 since 2007.

Earlier in the day, Iga Swiatek dominated 15th-seeded Karolina Muchova with a 6-1, 6-1 victory to secure her place in the quarterfinals.

Swiatek has only lost six games in three rounds, matching Monica Seles’

In pursuit of history, Swiatek aims to be the first woman to capture three titles at the Indian Wells Open and the first to defend her title since Martina Navratilova in 1991.

Since the event's inception in 1989, Monica Seles holds the record for the fewest games lost en route to the women's singles title at Indian Wells, having dropped only 12 games in 1992 (across five matches). If anyone can replicate such an extraordinary achievement, it would be Swiatek.
