Key Takeaways
Dubai, Jan 30 (NationPress) The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially revealed the match officials designated for the group stage of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, commencing on February 7. A total of 24 officials will take on roles as on-field umpires, while six referees will oversee the matches during this crucial phase.
Details regarding the officials for the Super Eight and knockout rounds will be disclosed later.
Kumar Dharmasena and Wayne Knights are set to officiate the opening encounter between Pakistan and the Netherlands at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. This match will be Knights’ inaugural appearance at an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, while Dharmasena continues to build upon his extensive tournament experience.
Dharmasena played a significant role in Sri Lanka’s victory at the 1996 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and has officiated in 37 matches at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, including finals in 2016 and 2022. This achievement ranks him fourth among officials for matches officiated in this championship.
Knights will also celebrate a milestone during the Group A match as he officiates his 50th T20 International as an on-field umpire. On the same opening day in Kolkata, Nitin Menon and Sam Nogajski will oversee the Group C match featuring Scotland against the West Indies.
Menon was part of the on-field umpire team for the first semi-final of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup between Afghanistan and South Africa. Nogajski officiated four group matches in the previous edition, including India’s matchup against the USA.
India and the USA are scheduled to clash later on February 7 in Mumbai, with Paul Reiffel and Rod Tucker appointed as the on-field umpires. Tucker holds the record for the most matches officiated at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with 46 appearances so far and is poised to reach his 50th match during the tournament. He will also officiate matches such as England versus Nepal, India against Namibia, and South Africa versus the United Arab Emirates.
Chris Gaffaney and Richard Illingworth, who collaborated in the 2024 final, will reunite for the Group B match between Australia and Ireland on February 11. Illingworth will also join Dharmasena as on-field officials for the highly anticipated group-stage match between India and Pakistan in Colombo on February 15.
