Dhaka, Nov 17 (NationPress) Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has decided to withdraw from the upcoming season of the Bangladesh Premier League, marking the first occasion since the league's launch in 2012 that he will not participate.

The seasoned opener confirmed to Cricbuzz on Sunday (November 16) that he had formally requested the Bangladesh Cricket Board to remove his name from the players' draft, which is set to occur on November 23.

Tamim shared his decision with BCB cricket operations manager Shahriar Nafees, as reported by Cricbuzz.

His absence will undoubtedly be significant, as he has consistently been recognized as one of the league's most reliable and skilled batsmen. Over the years, Tamim has amassed impressive statistics and played a crucial leadership role, most recently leading Fortune Barishal to consecutive BPL championships. His contributions as both captain and a key batsman were vital to the franchise's achievements.

While Tamim's decision may surprise some, those familiar with his recent situation will recognize several influencing factors. Fortune Barishal has also opted out of the upcoming tournament, citing insufficient preparation time. Furthermore, Tamim has been facing serious health issues.

The 36-year-old has stayed away from competitive cricket since March 2024, following a heart attack suffered during a domestic match—an event that understandably shifted his focus toward long-term health recovery instead of an immediate return to professional cricket.

In addition to health and franchise matters, Tamim expressed interest in moving towards cricket administration. He initially intended to run in the BCB elections but later withdrew, claiming inappropriate government interference in the electoral process.
