Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 12 (NationPress) Tanvi Sharma, the silver medalist at the world junior championships, alongside the national champions in women’s doubles, Ashwini Bhat K. and Shikha Gautam, as well as M. Tharun Mannepalli, have been elevated to the main draw of the BWF India Open 2026 following the withdrawal of several top players just before the tournament commenced.
Notably, Shi Yuqi, the world champion and No. 1 in men’s singles from China, has withdrawn after retiring in the final match of the Malaysia Open 2026 against Kunlavut Vitidsarn. Another Chinese player, Weng Hong Yang, has also pulled out.
In the women’s singles category, the third seed and reigning world champion, Akane Yamaguchi, who had to retire against PV Sindhu in the quarterfinals of the same event, has also stepped back, allowing Tanvi to make her debut at the India Open.
Tanvi is set to compete against Wang Zhi Yi, the second seed from China, in her opening match; should she achieve an upset victory, the 16-year-old might face fellow Indian and two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu in the next round.
Tharun’s advancement from the reserve list results in two all-Indian clashes in the opening round of men’s singles. Lakshya Sen will compete against Ayush Shetty, while Tharun will take on Kidambi Srikanth.
In the women’s doubles sector, Ashwini and Shikha are set to challenge Margot Lambert and Camille Pognante from France in their opening match.
Former World Champion PV Sindhu and the men's doubles duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy expressed that competing well at home is uniquely fulfilling. The Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2026 holds additional significance this year, especially with the BWF World Badminton Championships scheduled at the same venue in August.
Set to occur from January 13-18, 2026, the Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2026 is a BWF World Tour Super 750 event and will serve as a preparatory stage for the prestigious BWF World Championships 2026. The badminton action is shifting to the expansive multi-purpose hall at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, promising fans an enhanced viewing experience.
