Ahmedabad, March 7 (NationPress) Sri Lankan golfer N. Thangaraja achieved a remarkable five-shot victory following a proficient final round score of one-over 73 at the INR 1 crore Ahmedabad Open 2025 held at the Kensville Golf & Country Club near Ahmedabad.
The 43-year-old Thangaraja (65-73-69-73), who led after the third round by five strokes, effectively utilized his substantial overnight lead by carding a composed 73, culminating in a total score of eight-under 280 for the tournament. This triumph marked his fifth PGTI title and his first victory since 2023, earning him the winner's cheque of INR 15 lakh, which elevated him from seventh to second place in the PGTI Order of Merit.
Mysuru’s Yashas Chandra (72-70-70-73) also finished with a final round of 73, securing the runner-up position with an overall score of three-under 285. Italy’s Michele Ortolani (68-74-72-72) followed in third at two-under 286 after posting a fourth-round score of 72.
Ahmedabad’s Varun Parikh (72) and Chandigarh’s Harendra Gupta (75) tied for fourth place at one-under 287.
Thangaraja, who set the pace in the opening round and regained his lead in the third round, had a relatively uneventful final day, making only one birdie while recording two bogeys. His sole birdie came on the Par-5 sixth hole, where he successfully landed his chip within four feet of the pin.
The Colombo resident maintained a consistent round, encountering minimal challenges throughout the day. Thangaraja dropped shots on the 16th and 17th holes, but by that time, he had already established a commanding eight-shot lead, rendering his victory inevitable.
Thangaraja remarked, “I made a solid start and as my lead grew, I realized there was no need to take unnecessary risks. I focused on playing standard golf, aiming to hit as many fairways and greens as possible. By the time I reached the back nine, I felt confident about my victory.
“I believe my proficiency with low shots significantly aided me in the windy conditions this week. Although round four was calmer, my earlier performances—where I executed several low shots—were instrumental in laying the groundwork for this victory. Winning early in the season is an excellent way to build momentum for the upcoming year,” he added.
Yashas Chandra, who secured his fourth runner-up finish on the PGTI, concluded the week with a round of 73 that included four birdies, three bogeys, and a double-bogey.
