New Delhi, June 16 (NationPress) As the inaugural Shooting League of India approaches in just a few months, Olympian Arjun Babuta is optimistic that this league will propel the sport further and discussed the athletes' eagerness for this exciting format.

Indian shooters achieved remarkable success at the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing three medals, which underscores the burgeoning talent in the country. This momentum was recently amplified when Arjun Babuta and Arya Borse won the gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team event at the ISSF World Cup (Rifle/Pistol)—a significant milestone that reflects India's unwavering excellence on the international stage.

“There are high expectations, and our imaginations are running wild. I don't think we've ever been this enthusiastic about an international event as we are for this league. I truly believe that such an occasion will foster the growth of the sport at various levels. The game will finally receive the recognition it rightfully deserves. We are now eagerly anticipating the next steps and how this will unfold,” remarked the 26-year-old.

Babuta, celebrated for his focus and dedication, stated, “If such a mindset encourages you to channel your skills positively, then it's certainly beneficial. However, I am someone who concentrates on the task before me and my actions, so whatever occurs is due to my efforts. I approach my passion for shooting without expectations of outcomes; I enjoy the sport, which keeps my mind clear. While other factors may not impact my performance, if it benefits someone else, then that’s great.”

Although shooting is mainly an individual sport, the franchise-based model will provide athletes with the opportunity to engage in a team setting—an exhilarating challenge for many. Babuta is no stranger to team competition, having represented SV Pfeil e.V. Vohringen in Germany's esteemed Bundesliga.

"Having participated in a team in Germany's Bundesliga, I understand how that system functions. It’s thrilling and presents various unique challenges. This experience will be beneficial, and everyone will gain a fresh perspective. There’s less pressure, allowing you to enjoy the game and make it entertaining for the audience. This initiative led by NRAI is poised for significant growth,” the Punjab native expressed.

The ISSF has designated the period from November 20 to December 2 for the inaugural season of the Shooting League of India. The competition will include mixed team events in pistol (10m, 25m), rifle (10m, 50m 3 positions), and shotgun (Trap & Skeet), as sanctioned by the NRAI Technical Committee.

Babuta believes that the league will not only refine competitive skills but also enable the public to connect more profoundly with athletes as individuals.

“It would be beneficial for the public to gain insight into how athletes operate beyond what is portrayed in films. They could better understand their processes, challenges, and motivations. Once this occurs, people will also gain perspective on personal growth and overcoming their obstacles.

“Everyone faces individual challenges, but it’s about discovering your unique path to your desired destination. I believe the league will assist people, as these various journeys will be shared authentically,” he elaborated.

Athletes will be categorized into four tiers—Elite Champions, World Elite, National Champions, and Junior & Youth Champions. Babuta is excited about the opportunity to share a dressing room with international stars, believing it will enhance the mindset and preparation of Indian athletes.

“I previously felt that training with international shooters and observing their mental focus would help us understand how to gain an edge, as we have always been technically proficient but could improve our mental approaches. Now that we rank among the best globally, if we compete on the same team as them, we can exchange ideas and evaluate areas for improvement,” he stated.

“For those who aren't devoted fans of shooting, this will also provide them with a clearer understanding of the sport. They will gain insight into who the athletes are, their thought processes, and philosophies. It would offer viewers a remarkable perspective,” Babuta concluded.

Point of View

The Shooting League of India stands as a beacon for aspiring shooters. It not only promises to elevate the sport's profile but also galvanizes a new generation of athletes to dream big and achieve excellence. As we witness this transformation, our commitment remains to uplift and support our athletes at every step.
