London, Sep 3 (IANs) England midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been reintroduced to the England squad for the first time in six years, following his last appearance for the Three Lions in 2018 due to an injury sustained by Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton.
England's head coach Thomas Tuchel, who previously collaborated with Loftus-Cheek during their time at Chelsea, played a significant role in this call-up, and the 29-year-old is confident that the German understands his capabilities as a player.
“When Tuchel arrived at Chelsea, I was still on loan at Fulham, and this was the year after my injury. I spent a year regaining my form. Initially, I didn’t know much about him as a manager when I returned. During pre-season with Chelsea, we discussed playing in a wing-back role. I also filled in as a centre-back for one match and right-wing back, showcasing my versatility,” Loftus-Cheek shared.
“Having worked with him, I feel that he knows me as a player, so I was hopeful that if I performed well, I might earn a chance. I was aware that the manager was monitoring players abroad, so I remained optimistic about getting selected. I received a message before the weekend instructing me to be prepared, but I wasn’t included in the initial squad,” he added.
Loftus-Cheek last represented the Three Lions in November 2018 and has accumulated a total of 10 caps.
England is set to continue their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying journey with a match against Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday, September 6, followed by an away game against Serbia in Belgrade on Tuesday, September 9.
When asked about the moment he learned of his call-up, Ruben replied, “It started with a text (from Ruth, not Thomas Tuchel) asking ‘where are you?’ I informed her that I was in England, and she said that was perfect. I was actually at my mum's house, which made it a delightful experience.”
