Frances Tiafoe opened his Terra Wortmann Open campaign with a commanding 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over Flavio Cobolli in the first round in Halle, Germany, on Monday, 15 June. The win — Tiafoe's first over a Top-10 opponent since 2024 — extended the American's remarkable unbeaten run in opening rounds to 13-0 this season.

How Tiafoe Controlled the Match

The World No. 26 was clinical from the outset, breaking Cobolli in each of the Italian's first two service games to race through the opening set in dominant fashion. The second set was tighter, with Tiafoe recovering from an early mini-break deficit before closing out the tie-break 7-4 to seal the contest in 85 minutes.

According to Infosys ATP Stats, Tiafoe won 81 per cent of points on his first serve — converting 34 of 42 — and remarkably did not face a single break point throughout the match. He now leads Cobolli 4-1 in their ATP head-to-head, having also beaten the Italian at Indian Wells in March.

What Tiafoe Said After the Win

'Obviously, he's a hell of a player and had a hell of a season,' Tiafoe said after the match. 'But I knew he was coming out for his first match [this year] on grass, and you have to find your feet under you, and obviously he's got to come down to reality after the final. That's never easy, especially on a whole different surface.'

He added: 'I tried to just come out there flying and make it super tough for him. Play really fast and make him feel uncomfortable. It was a good day. He's going to be ready to go for Wimbledon. He's a Wimbledon quarter-finalist, so he knows how to play on grass.'

Context: Cobolli's Grass Transition

Cobolli, ranked World No. 10, arrived in Halle fresh from reaching the Roland Garros final — a career-best result on clay. The transition to grass, however, is notoriously demanding, and Tiafoe targeted that uncertainty with aggressive, fast-paced tennis from the first game. Notably, Cobolli is a former Wimbledon quarter-finalist and is expected to regroup quickly for the grass-court Major.

Other First-Round Results in Halle

Second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime also progressed, though he was pushed to three sets by Nuno Borges before prevailing 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The win made the Canadian the fifth player to reach 25 tour-level victories this season. He will next face American Learner Tien, who beat wild card Max Schoenhaus 6-2, 6-4 earlier in the day.

German wildcard hope Daniel Altmaier celebrated a landmark moment, claiming his first grass-court win at an ATP Tour event on home soil by defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-5, 6-4. Altmaier had been winless across six previous attempts at Halle and Stuttgart. Terence Atmane also advanced, edging Martin Landaluce 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2).

Tiafoe's second-round opponent will be either Tallon Griekspoor or Sho Shimabukuro, as the American looks to build further momentum ahead of Wimbledon.
