New Delhi, Jan 8 (NationPress) – Indian cricketer Tilak Varma has been sidelined for the initial three T20I matches against New Zealand after he underwent abdominal surgery in Rajkot, as confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday.

Reports from IANS indicate that the 23-year-old Varma had an emergency procedure following scans that indicated surgery was necessary at a specialized hospital in Rajkot on Wednesday evening due to acute abdominal pain experienced earlier that day.

His participation in the remaining two matches will depend on his recovery progress during the training and skill reintegration phases. “He was discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning and is expected to fly back to Hyderabad on Friday. Currently, he is stable and recovering well,” a BCCI statement noted.

“Tilak will begin physical training and gradually re-engage in skill activities once his symptoms have subsided completely and the wound has healed satisfactorily. He is ruled out of the first three T20Is against New Zealand. His availability for the final two games will be evaluated based on his recovery progress,” said BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia.

Given Varma’s recovery timeline, his participation in India’s T20 World Cup opener against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 7 is uncertain, with additional group matches lined up against Nambia (February 12), Pakistan (February 15), and the Netherlands (February 18).

Varma has been instrumental in India's T20I performance, accumulating 1,183 runs in 37 innings with an impressive average of 49.29 and a strike rate of 144.09. His record includes two centuries and six half-centuries. His absence may lead to Suryakumar Yadav batting in the crucial number three spot.

The Indian team has yet to announce a replacement for Varma for the first three T20Is against New Zealand, scheduled to be held in Nagpur, Raipur, and Guwahati on January 21, 23, and 25, respectively. The latter two T20Is will take place in Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram on January 28 and 31.
