New Delhi, Jan 31 (NationPress) Left-handed batsman Tilak Varma is set to potentially play in India A’s warm-up match against the United States of America (USA) prior to joining the Indian squad for the Men’s T20 World Cup commencing on February 7.

At 23 years old, Tilak has been recuperating at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru following a lower abdominal surgery in Rajkot earlier this month. He was originally slated to join the Indian team for the last two T20Is against New Zealand but was kept out to ensure his readiness for the World Cup.

“Tilak participated in a simulation match at the CoE on Friday to assess his match fitness. Consequently, he is expected to play on February 2 for India A in their warm-up encounter against the USA at the DY Patil Stadium. Should all go well, he will then link up with the main Indian squad before their warm-up match against South Africa on February 4,” a source informed IANS on Saturday.

While the India ‘A’ squad has yet to be officially announced by the BCCI, fast bowler Mayank Yadav is anticipated to be included after a lengthy recovery from a lower back stress fracture that required surgical treatment in Christchurch, New Zealand, last year. He has been at the CoE focusing on his rehabilitation.

Despite limited appearances in the IPL 2025 due to injury, the Lucknow Super Giants have retained him for the 2026 IPL season. “Yes, Mayank has been included for the warm-up games, as he is now fully fit. He has been consistently bowling and participated in the simulation game at CoE on Friday,” stated another source familiar with the situation.

Batting all-rounder Riyan Parag, currently recovering from a right shoulder injury, is also expected to join the India A team after his participation in the simulation match at the CoE. Previously, Ayush Badoni and Priyansh Arya were confirmed for the India A team for the T20 World Cup warm-up games after being released from Delhi’s squad for their ongoing Ranji Trophy match against Mumbai.

It is believed that Badoni might be appointed as the India A captain, unless there are any last-minute changes from the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel. India A will also face another warm-up match against Namibia at the BCCI CoE Ground on February 6, while the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian team kicks off their title defense against the USA in a Group A match at the Wankhede Stadium on February 7.
