New Delhi, June 11 (NationPress) Emerging Indian batting star Tilak Varma is all set to expand his cricketing journey by joining Hampshire in the English county cricket scene for the current County Championship season. This transition represents a pivotal moment in the 22-year-old's illustrious career as he gets ready to showcase his red-ball abilities in demanding overseas conditions.
Having already played in four ODIs and 25 T20Is for India, Tilak's last appearance was with the Mumbai Indians during the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium on June 1. While his prowess in white-ball cricket is well known, his red-ball performances have also been impressive.
The announcement was officially made by the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) on Wednesday (June 11), emphasizing the left-hander's rising stature in international cricket.
“The Hyderabad Cricket Association is pleased to announce that Mr. N Thakur Tilak Varma has been approached by Hampshire County for participation in the UK County Championship League,” HCA stated in a release.
“The Hyderabad Cricket Association wishes him a successful tenure with Hampshire County.”
In his first-class career spanning 18 matches, he has accumulated 1204 runs, including five centuries and four half-centuries, highlighting his capability as a multi-format player. His latest red-ball performance was during the Duleep Trophy last September, where he represented India A against India C.
Hampshire, his new team, is currently engaged in their County Championship Division One campaign, having tallied two victories, three draws, and two losses from seven matches. They recently faced a nine-wicket defeat against table leaders Sussex and will next compete against Essex in Chelmsford from June 22–25—where Tilak might make his county debut.
Interestingly, Tilak is not the only Indian cricketer making his way to England this summer. On Tuesday, Ruturaj Gaikwad, captain of Chennai Super Kings, was announced as the latest overseas signing for Yorkshire. The elegant right-hander is expected to join the club prior to their County Championship match against Surrey in July and will remain for the entire season, including the One-Day Cup.
Gaikwad’s signing follows the legacy of Indian legends like Sachin Tendulkar, who was Yorkshire’s first overseas player in 1992, alongside Yuvraj Singh and Cheteshwar Pujara.
