Kolkata, Jan 13 (NationPress) Team India’s Test and ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, has faced intense scrutiny following the 1-3 loss to Australia in the 2024/25 Border Gavaskar Trophy series. The opening batsman's difficulties persisted in Australia, leading him to withdraw from the playing XI for the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwari expressed confidence in the captain's ability to bounce back, attributing his recent lack of runs to diminished self-confidence.

“The performance is not up to the mark, there’s no denying that. If he was performing well, he wouldn’t have chosen to sit out. After the events in Sydney during the last Test, he openly stated in an interview that his inability to score runs was the reason he decided not to play,” Tiwari remarked.

“When runs are hard to come by, it impacts your self-confidence, and a drop in confidence naturally leads to a decline in run-scoring ability. Rohit is undoubtedly going to focus on improving his batting. He is known for his explosive run-scoring in white-ball formats and possesses great potential. A player of his caliber may need some time to find his form again, but I firmly believe he can enhance his performances in red-ball cricket as well,” Tiwari told IANS on Monday.

India concluded the five-Test series with a 3-1 defeat, missing the chance for a third consecutive appearance in the World Test Championship final. Rohit, who missed the opening Test due to the birth of his second child, struggled to surpass 10 runs in five innings before deciding to rest during the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He managed only 31 runs throughout the series, facing significant public criticism for his poor performances. Additionally, former players and the media raised concerns about his leadership, which previously gave India opportunities to succeed in major ICC events in red-ball formats.

The team’s hopes for the WTC Final were dashed following consecutive series losses against New Zealand and Australia, including a disheartening 0-3 clean sweep at home after a lengthy duration.

“The performance has been lacking. The results in Test matches haven't been satisfactory. In T20, we recently won the World Cup, but in Test cricket, we faced a 3-0 defeat at home against New Zealand, which is quite regrettable; such outcomes are not typical and should not occur, especially in home conditions,” Tiwari added.
