Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova Claim Miami Title, Completing Sunshine Double
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Miami, March 30 (NationPress) In a remarkable display of skill, American Taylor Townsend and Czech Katerina Siniakova triumphed over the top-seeded Italian duo of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini with a score of 7-6 (0), 6-1 in the women's doubles final at the Miami Open. This victory marks the first time since Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka accomplished the Sunshine Double in 2019 that a pair has completed this prestigious achievement.
The duo also joins an elite group as the sixth women's doubles team to succeed at the Sunshine Double, following in the footsteps of Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova (1990), Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs (2002), Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur (2006, 2007), Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza (2015), and Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka (2019).
Notably, Nathasa Zvereva (1997), Hingis (1999), and Bethanie Mattek-Sands (2016) also achieved victories in both tournaments during the same year but with different partners.
Furthermore, this win marks the fifth title for Townsend and Siniakova as a pair, which includes two Grand Slam victories at the 2024 Wimbledon and 2025 Australian Open.
During the match, the duo showcased their dominance by winning 75% of their first serves and converting 5 out of 10 break points compared to the Italians' 2 out of 7. As a result, they will ascend to No. 3 in the Doubles Race, while Errani and Paolini will move up from No. 8 to No. 6.
In a heartfelt moment during the trophy presentation, Siniakova expressed her appreciation for Townsend, stating, “Thank you so much for playing. It’s a pleasure to kind of (get to know) you more. So thank you for playing with me and making it fun. I’m really enjoying this time with you.”
This was the second time both players competed in a Miami final; Townsend had previously reached the 2023 final alongside Leylah Fernandez, while Siniakova had participated in the 2018 final with fellow Czech Barbora Krejcikova.
With this latest victory, the duo solidifies their strong start to the season as they aim for another berth at the WTA Finals. As the tour shifts to clay, Siniakova and Townsend are anticipated to rise to No. 3 in the Race to Riyadh. Townsend is also on track to return to the Top 5 of the PIF WTA Doubles Rankings.
Meanwhile, Errani and Paolini also achieved significant progress with their semifinal appearance in Indian Wells and a runner-up finish in Miami, projected to ascend to No. 3 in the rankings and No. 6 in the race on Monday.
