Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) – FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Wednesday that he had a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, who confirmed that Iran is "welcome" to participate in the upcoming 2026 World Cup. This tournament will be jointly hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
Iran is set to play three matches in the United States, but their participation has raised concerns due to the ongoing regional tensions. They are placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, with their first match against New Zealand scheduled for June 15 in Seattle, followed by additional games in Los Angeles and Atlanta.
In an Instagram update, Infantino expressed that he and Trump discussed the progress of preparations for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup and the current situation in Iran.
"I met with President Donald J. Trump to talk about the preparations for the World Cup and the increasing excitement as we approach the kickoff in just 93 days," Infantino noted.
He continued, "We also addressed the ongoing situation in Iran and acknowledged that the Iranian team has successfully qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026. During our talks, President Trump emphasized that the Iranian team is indeed welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States."
Iran secured their place in this World Cup by winning Group A in the third round of Asian qualifying last year.
In a recent interview with Politico, Trump stated, "I really don’t care if Iran participates," adding that "Iran is a very badly defeated country. They’re running on fumes."
Following the commencement of military actions, Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iran Football Federation, remarked, "What is certain is that after these attacks, it's hard to look at the World Cup with hope."
