Washington, Dec 6 (NationPress) On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump was awarded the inaugural 2025 FIFA Peace Prize during the World Cup draw event held in the U.S. capital. The global governing body of football recognized him for facilitating a series of prominent peace agreements and for his exceptional efforts to promote global peace and unity.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented Trump with a medal and certificate, stating, "This is your prize, this is your peace prize."
As he read the citation, Infantino explained that the award is given each year on behalf of billions of football enthusiasts worldwide to an individual who demonstrates a strong commitment to fostering peace and unity through significant leadership and actions.
The certificate affirmed FIFA's choice to honor Trump with the 2025 Peace Prize "in recognition of his exceptional and extraordinary actions to promote peace and unity around the world, Friday, December 5th, 2025."
Infantino referenced several agreements he personally witnessed in recent years.
"A few years ago, I observed the signing of the Abraham Accords, and recently in Sharm el-Sheikh, the Middle East peace agreement concerning Gaza. I was present in Kuala Lumpur for the peace negotiations between Cambodia and Thailand, and just yesterday here in Washington, for the peace agreement between Rwanda and the DRC," he noted.
"This is what we expect from a leader… And you undoubtedly deserve the first FIFA Peace Prize for your efforts," Infantino added.
In his acceptance speech, Trump remarked, "This is truly one of the great honors of my life," claiming that the peace initiatives praised by FIFA had saved countless lives. "We saved millions; for instance, in the Congo, over 10 million lives were lost, and we were on the verge of losing another 10 million very quickly… In conflicts involving India and Pakistan, we have often intervened just in time before things escalated."
Trump commended Infantino's leadership of the sport and the growing excitement surrounding the 2026 World Cup.
"You've broken records in ticket sales… The figures are beyond what anyone, even Johnny, thought possible," he said, referring to Infantino's nickname.
He expressed gratitude towards his family, including former First Lady Melania Trump, and emphasized the close cooperation with Canada and Mexico, the co-hosts of the tournament.
"The world is a safer place now," he concluded.
Earlier, when asked about receiving the peace prize while upholding a commitment to act against Venezuela, Trump responded, "I believe the Peace Prize is warranted since I have resolved eight conflicts… I can assert that I have settled eight wars, with a ninth on the horizon, something no one has achieved before. However, my priority is to save lives; I don’t seek accolades—my goal is to save lives."
