Anusha Kutumbale delivered a composed Golden Point finish to hand reigning champions U Mumba TT their first win of Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7, edging Dabang Delhi TTC 8-7 in a pulsating contest at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Taleigaon, Panaji, on Wednesday, 15 July. The result also ended Delhi's unbeaten run in the season.

How the Tie Unfolded

Youssef Abdelaziz handed Delhi the early initiative, defeating Manush Shah in three games (11-9, 11-5, 6-11). U Mumba hit back immediately through Anna Hursey, who rallied from a game down to beat Sutirtha Mukherjee 2-1 — inflicting on Mukherjee her first game and first match defeat of the campaign.

The momentum swung further towards U Mumba when Hursey and Manush Shah combined to stun the previously unbeaten doubles pairing of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Maria Xiao, snapping a seven-match winning streak that had stretched across Seasons 6 and 7. Lilian Bardet then overcame Sathiyan in a tight three-game contest, extending his own unbeaten international record against the Indian veteran.

Xiao Fights Back, Anusha Holds Nerve

With U Mumba leading 6-1 on games, the decisive Women's Singles clash between Anusha Kutumbale and Maria Xiao shaped up as a formality — but Spain's Xiao had other ideas. She saved four tie points to claim the opening game, then took the second to drag the overall tie level at 7-7.

Everything came down to a single Golden Point rally in the third game. Anusha held her composure to win it, sealing U Mumba's first victory of UTT Season 7 and ending Delhi's unbeaten record in the process. Notably, this was the kind of pressure finish that separates title contenders from pretenders — and Anusha delivered it on the biggest stage of the night.

Anna Hursey was named Foreign Player of the Tie for her influential double contribution. U Mumba captain Manush Shah took the Indian Player of the Tie honour. Maria Xiao was adjudged the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie despite finishing on the losing side, while Sathiyan Gnanasekaran earned the Bisleri Shot of the Tie award.

UTT Juniors Update

In the UTT Juniors competition running alongside Season 7, Dempo Goa Challengers became the first team to secure a semifinal berth with a commanding 7-2 win over Ahmedabad APL Pipers. HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades also strengthened their playoff push, edging PBG Pune Jaguars 5-4 to climb to second place on the standings.
