U Mumba TT staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Dempo Goa Challengers 8-5 in the Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 grand finale on Sunday, 26 July at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa, successfully defending their title and ending the challengers' historic unbeaten run through the season. The victory made U Mumba the first team to win consecutive UTT crowns and drew them level with Goa as the competition's most successful franchise, with two titles each.

How the Final Unfolded

The title clash began on the back foot for the defending champions. Abhinandh PB, Dempo Goa's breakout star, opened proceedings by defeating Lilian Bardet 2-1 (7-11, 9-11, 11-6), handing the challengers an early advantage. Bernadette Szocs then rallied from a game down to beat Anna Hursey 2-1 (11-5, 7-11, 7-11), stretching Goa's lead to 4-2 and leaving U Mumba needing an extraordinary turnaround.

The momentum shifted decisively in the mixed doubles. Manush Shah and Anna Hursey extended their unbeaten partnership to six consecutive matches, sweeping Alvaro Robles and Syndrela Das in straight games — 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 — to swing the tie in U Mumba's favour.

Manush Shah's Captain's Knock

Captain Manush Shah carried that momentum into the men's singles against Alvaro Robles. After dropping the opening game 6-11, he edged a tense second game 11-10 before closing out the decider 11-5, handing U Mumba a crucial 7-5 lead. It was a defining captain's performance under finals pressure. Notably, Manush and his doubles partner Hursey were both ranked World No. 2 at the time of the final, underscoring the calibre on display.

Anusha Kutumbale Seals the Title

With everything riding on the final match, Anusha Kutumbale faced Syndrela Das in a nervy decider. Syndrela mounted a stunning comeback, erasing a 5-9 deficit to level the game at 10-10. But Kutumbale held her composure to clinch the winning point 11-10, sparking jubilant celebrations and handing Dempo Goa their first and only defeat of the entire season.

The triumph also marked a successful campaign for coaches John Murphy and Jay Modak, who were brought back by the franchise and guided the team to a second consecutive UTT crown.

The Historic Double

U Mumba's triumph extended beyond the senior title. The franchise had earlier lifted the Dream UTT Juniors title earlier in the month, becoming the first team in UTT history to complete the senior-junior double in a single season — a feat that underscores the depth of their setup.

Reflecting on the league's broader impact, one of the organisers said: 'For me, the most important objective is to promote the sport and ensure that Indian players benefit the most from initiatives like these. When we launched this league, we said Indian players had to improve and that India had to win an Olympic medal, and that remains our goal. We are getting closer with every passing year.'

Another official added: 'As we conclude the seventh season of Butterfly UTT, it is gratifying to see how the league continues to grow stronger with each passing year. The quality of competition, the emergence of Indian talent and the passion shown by fans reaffirm our vision for the sport.'

Individual Awards

Manush Shah was named Men's Most Valuable Player of the season, while Anna Hursey took the Women's Most Valuable Player award. Omar Assar of PBG Pune Jaguars won the Shot of the League, and Abhinandh PB was honoured as the Player of the League. In the final, Manush also collected the Player of the Tie and Shot of the Tie honours, while Hursey was named Foreign Player of the Tie.

With Indian players like Manush Shah, Anusha Kutumbale, and Abhinandh PB stepping up on the biggest stage, UTT Season 7 has reinforced the league's standing as a genuine accelerator for Indian table tennis talent — and the chase for an Olympic medal grows more credible with each edition.
