Union Sports Minister Mandaviya Honors 'Hockey Legend' Major Dhyan Chand on His Death Anniversary

New Delhi, Dec 3 (NationPress) Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya honored 'Hockey Legend' Major Dhyan Chand on the occasion of his 45th death anniversary on Tuesday at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium.

"Paying tribute to the world's greatest hockey player, 'Hockey Magician' Major Dhyan Chand ji on his death anniversary. He serves as a source of inspiration for hockey players globally. His extraordinary playing skills have brought glory to India on an international stage," Mandaviya shared on X.

Major Dhyan Chand passed away in Delhi on December 3, 1979. He played a crucial role in helping India secure their first gold medal in hockey at the Olympic Games in 1928 and remained active for nearly three decades.

Additionally, Dhyan Chand captained the Indian hockey team to three Olympic gold medals, a record that remains unparalleled in the annals of Indian sports.

After an illustrious career, Dhyan Chand retired from the Indian Army in 1956, achieving the rank of Major. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, which is India’s third-highest civilian honor.

India commemorates National Sports Day on August 29, coinciding with Dhyan Chand's birthday, to celebrate his significant contributions to the nation.
